Choosing Between a Sedan, an SUV and a 4x4
The cheapest vehicle that can actually do your route is the right one. Here is how those three compare on Rwandan roads.

People often over-book on vehicle size, paying for a 4x4 they never take off tarmac. Occasionally they under-book and get stuck. Both are avoidable.
Sedan
Best for Kigali and the main highways to Musanze, Huye and Rubavu. Economical on fuel, easy to park, comfortable for four. Not suitable for park tracks or steep unpaved access roads.
SUV
The middle ground, and the one most visitors want. Higher clearance for rough patches and rainy-season roads, room for luggage and a family of five, still reasonable at the pump.
4x4 Land Cruiser
Necessary for Akagera tracks, the Volcanoes access roads in the wet, and any serious upcountry travel. Seats seven, carries real luggage, and copes with anything Rwanda can put under it.
