Self-Drive or With a Driver: Which Suits Your Trip?
Both cost less than people expect. The right answer depends on your route, your schedule and how much you want to think about parking.

This is the question we are asked most, and the honest answer is that it depends less on budget than people assume. A driver adds a flat daily fee, not a percentage, so on longer hires the difference narrows.
Choose self-drive if
- Your plans change day to day and you want to leave when you feel like it.
- You are staying mostly in Kigali or on main tarmac routes.
- You are comfortable navigating unfamiliar roads and parking in a busy city.
Choose a driver if
- You are here for work and want to answer email between meetings.
- Your itinerary covers national parks or long upcountry stretches.
- You are travelling as a group and want everyone free to look out the window.
For a first visit covering more than one region, most guests are happier with a driver. For a week based in Kigali, self-drive wins.
What a driver actually includes
Our drivers speak English and Kinyarwanda, know the routes and the parking, and handle fuel stops. Their own accommodation and meals on overnight trips are covered in the daily rate — there is nothing extra to settle at the end.
